Just off the coast of Palliki Peninsula, at the entrance to Livadi Bay, lies Vardiani Island, a secluded paradise shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Stretching eastward and widening westward, this island holds stories of its past, whispers of its former grandeur, and invites you to explore its captivating charm.
The island’s name, believed to be derived from the Italian words “vardia” or “guardiano,” meaning “guardian,” hints at its strategic position guarding the entrance to the bay. In 1824, under the command of the English Charles Napier, a magnificent lighthouse, standing tall at 25 meters, was erected on the island, its cylindrical tower and side house for keepers serving as a beacon for passing ships.
Unfortunately, the tower fell victim to Italian bombing in 1942 and was completely destroyed by the devastating earthquake of 1953. Today, a smaller lighthouse stands in its place, faithfully guiding vessels through the waters.
